RS232 CAT1 LTE Gateway

The TRB142 is a compact industrial IoT Gateway designed by Teltonika to bridge legacy industrial equipment and modern LTE networks. In essence, it enables devices with RS232 serial interface that are commonly found in older controllers, meters, or automation systems, to connect to 4G/LTE (CAT 1) cellular networks, with fallback to 3G & 2G.

From a connectivity standpoint, the TRB142 supports 2G, 3G, as well as 4G/LTE CAT1, offering a pathway for serial devices to be brought into IP-connected systems without requiring extensive rewiring or redesign.

Alongside the RS232 port, the TRB142 also features a micro USB port, which can serve as a virtual network interface, and an LTE indoor antenna with SMA male connector for the cellular modem.

The Gateway runs on Teltonika’s RutOS (based on OpenWRT) which gives it full networking capabilities such as VPN, firewall, routing, and remote management via Teltonika’s RMS platform.

Mechanically and environmentally the TRB142 is built for industrial use, as its aluminium housing, wide input voltage range, and operating temperature from -40 °C to +75 °C mean it can work effectively in control panels, automation racks, or remote sites, whilst its small compact size contribute to making the Gateway suitable for installations where space is at a premium.

In terms of typical use-cases, the TRB142 is ideal for connecting serial-based devices, such as older PLCs, RS232 modems, SCADA systems, or remote meters, to a cellular backbone, enabling remote monitoring or control.
